Yes, that should not be a problem. I have a lot of cables like that, but that's exactly what I don't have and I've never had any problems.
It is difficult to make a diagnosis from a distance. Please check if the source on your monitor is set correctly using the buttons on the monitor. If you are using the HDMI part of the cable on the monitor, select HDMI on the monitor.

Yes exactly, if your screen has a DVI connection & your laptop an HDMI then it works.
It seems to me that you first need an adapter for two screens, so-called Y-cables.
