Good subwoofers don't have to be expensive, as the Hifonics Mercury woofers show. Sure, there are better ones, but here you get a lot of bass at an astonishingly high level for little money.
Mercury MRW Performance
The optimal application of the two Mercury subwoofers MRW104 and MRW84 can be found in the bass reflex or bandpass range. Since the woofers require relatively small volumes, using multiple subwoofers is recommended. For example, an MRW84 in a 20-liter bass reflex enclosure already achieves an extremely low cutoff frequency (-3 dB) of 32 Hz. With minimal deep bass compromises, but significantly more dynamics and tight bass, these subs are also highly recommended for use in small sealed enclosures.
The quality of the Mercury subwoofers is exceptional: with perforated steel baskets in HiFonics design, they not only make a visual statement, but the selection of components used is also impressive. Crafted paper cones, durable rubber surrounds, and robust spiders are the key ingredients. Even the small MRW84 with a diameter of 20 cm features a generously sized 50 mm voice coil, just like its larger brother MRW104. Visually, both woofers impress with a chrome-plated basket and magnet boot, making them particularly striking even in inverted installations, such as in the Mercury boxes, where the basket is prominently displayed.
