Canon's new wide-angle lens for the R system costs only 330 euros. In the centre of the frame, it delivers top values for resolution and contrast at f/2.8 and f/5.6. However, both decrease by about 50 per cent towards the edges. Shutting down the aperture does little to change this...
... With just 0.6 f-stops of edge shading at open aperture f/2.8, there is hardly anything to complain about in the test of lens quality. Distortion is almost non-existent, as is chromatic aberration. The autofocus performance is top. The standard deviation is very low. All in all, the new wide-angle is a real recommendation to buy.
