Best controllers for the PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

With the "T598-X", Thrustmaster brings Direct Drive technology to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC for the first time. The Direct Drive motor delivers precise force feedback with a response time of just five milliseconds.
As anyone who seriously simulates races knows: The feel for the vehicle is crucial. If you want to feel every bump, every load shift and every loss of grip precisely, there is no way around a direct-drive steering wheel. But the entry-level prices of such systems are high. The Thrustmaster «T598-X» aims to change this and brings direct-drive technology to a price level that was previously reserved for belt and gear solutions.
The aim is to create an immediate driving experience, especially in bends, when changing direction quickly or on uneven roads. The system reacts more quickly to inputs and provides a better indication of when the grip is fading. According to the manufacturer, this is an advantage that you will notice immediately, especially in simulations such as «Assetto Corsa Competizione» or «iRacing».
The «T598-X» base is flat and angular. The unit can be mounted using a screw mount or table clamp and is compatible with all common Cockpit systems. There is a small display at the top of the housing that shows profiles and system settings.
The supplied 30-centimetre steering wheel features rubberised grip surfaces and magnetic shift paddles. According to the manufacturer, these should respond with clear feedback. The quick-release system allows you to replace the wheel and switch to a GT or formula steering wheel from the Thrustmaster ecosystem, for example. The steering wheel weighs 811 grammes.
The Raceline pedal set with accelerator and brake is included in the scope of delivery. Both pedals use Hall sensors that work without physical contact and are therefore more durable. The springs and resistance can be adjusted to customise the feeling of pressure to your own preferences.
A third pedal can be retrofitted as an option. The design is robust, but is clearly aimed at users who want to enter the world of sim racing or expand their existing setup.
The «T598-X» is compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC. Two operating modes are available: a native Xbox mode and a legacy mode for backwards compatible titles. Pedals, handbrake or gear lever can be connected directly via the integrated connections.
You can save several profiles and call them up via the display. This is helpful if you use different simulations or want to customise your force feedback.
My interests are varied, I just like to enjoy life. Always on the lookout for news about darts, gaming, films and series.
Presentations of select new products at Digitec and Galaxus. Tested, to the point, no marketing blah.
Show allThrustmaster relies on an axial direct motor for the «T598-X», which operates with five Newton metres of continuous power and can deliver twice that in the short term. The overshoot capacity is +100 per cent and the latency is five milliseconds. The motor transmits the forces directly to the steering shaft, without belts or gears. The result: less play, no noticeable jerking (cogging) and a very even force curve.
