Fashion tape is designed to secure low necklines. But I’ll show you how to use it to shorten your trousers – no sewing required.
Cutting is out, folding is in! Rolling up the legs on pants that are too long is currently all the rage – and a great way to keep your hems dry on rainy days. The problem?
The folds are unlikely to survive the day once you start walking – unless you wear tight trousers and fold the hem twice. But if you prefer straight or wide-cut styles and are going for one rather wide fold, you’ll know that without a bit of help, the fold rarely stays where it should.
And as luck would have it, I have just the right trick up my sleeve: fashion tape. This double-sided adhesive tape is designed to prevent nip slips by holding the fabric around a low neckline in place. However, the tape doesn’t only work on skin to fabric, but also fabric to fabric.
Fashion tape is available in strips or rolls. Personally, I find the former handier. One product I really like is called Booby Tape – it’s easy to use and sticks well. According to the manufacturer, it’s also water-repellent and hypoallergenic. Having said that, any other fashion tape will do, too.
Lay out or hang up your trousers, grab a strip of tape and peel off the paper on one side. On the outside of your trousers, stick the tape onto the bottom of the hem. It’s best to attach two strips: one to the front and one to the back of the pant leg. If you want to be on the safe side, you can even use four.
Once the strips are in place, peel off the remaining paper and fold the trousers up to the right length. Now just put firm pressure on the fabric where the tape is – and that’s it. You’ve folded your trousers up neatly and the folds will stay put all day long.
Of course, this is only a temporary solution. You’ll have to remove the tape again when you wash the trousers – which is very easy to do, by the way. I like the fact that the alteration is only temporary. This way, I can wear the trousers with or without the folded up hems and adjust the length to suit my shoes and the weather. It’s an invisible, uncomplicated solution that doesn’t damage the fabric and can be done in no time at all.
